In order to help you arrive at the right decision below is a quick guide to help you decide on the best monitor for your usage and budget and what to look out for.

A Single Monitor or Dual Monitors?

iiyama CAD monitorIf you are only used to working with a single CAD monitor you may not have experienced how productive and user friendly it is to work with dual displays.

With two (or more) monitors CAD users will have to switch between applications much less and they will have the opportunity to view notes, watch demonstrations, check emails etc. on one monitor whilst working on a CAD drawing, Inventor assembly or Revit model for example on another.

A number of recent studies have shown that productivity increases when using dual monitors, and this is particularly true for anyone working in a CAD environment. Cisco recently commissioned a study to quantify the effective use of dual display use which can be found here for reference.

Monitor Size and Aspect Ratio for CAD

The larger the monitor, the easier it will be for users to see drawings and work clearly, especially with the number of palettes and tool bars needed on-screen today. We would always recommend that the largest monitors that will fit on your desk space are purchased as small computer displays are very counterproductive for CAD use.

Given the investment in your workstation and staff salaries it makes total financial sense to not limit display size for the sake of a relatively small cost saving.

Monitor Resolution and Pixel Density

The larger the resolution, the clearer and more precise the display will be. For users working with technical designs the highest resolution available should be selected. A resolution of 1920x1080 (HD standard) should be considered the minimum for using CAD software today, but with the price of UHD-1 (3840x2160) monitors now falling they are definitely worth considering – especially for larger monitors as they have 4 times the pixels in every square inch.

Computer Display Response Time

This is the time in microseconds it takes a pixel on the monitor to change from one colour to another. Users working with products such as Autodesk 3D Studio Max need the lowest values of response time whilst for normal CAD usage, a response time in the range of 5-10ms would suffice.

Viewing Angle

The viewing angle denotes how far to the side of the monitor you will be able to clearly see the display. This can be important if you expect to do a lot of collaboration with groups of people viewing the same display. If the monitor is intended for an individual to work on, then the viewing angle is less important.


Computer display connectors

Always worth checking that the selected monitor has inputs to match the ports on the workstation/PC. DisplayPort (Required for UHD connections), HDMI and DVI connections will be the most commonly required ports. Monitor Adjustments

One of the most overlooked aspects of a monitor that is critical for end user comport and health and safety is CAD Monitor adjustment. Cheaper displays are often restricted to simple tilt adjustment, whereas most CAD users will need to have height adjustment as well at the minimum.

You may also need to consider if require swivel adjustment too, for example will your user need to view a display in portrait or just landscape.
