Islands in the road - AutoCAD Civil 3D 2017 New Features – Skewed Targets and Baseline Feature Lines

Now I’ve been working with Civil 3D 2017 for a few months I wanted to share with you a few new features that I have found really useful.

This new feature you may have noticed, but maybe you can’t find any documentation on it, is the Inside Skewed Target Parameters for some assemblies (figure 1)

This is a really useful tool for Islands. You can draw your islands in 2D and set this InsideSkewTarget to meet it. To do this, draw your island with a polyline in 2D or 3D or as a Feature Line as in figure 2.

Then just simply set it as your Inside Skew Target via the Corridor Properties Parameter Tab or by the Edit Targets button in the Corridor Ribbon Tab.

Select the InsideSkewTarget (figure3) on the side you want to set and change the Select object type to target to Feature lines, survey figures and polylines. Then press Select from drawing.

This will put a nice hole in the middle of your corridor (figure4). It’s handy because you don’t have to think about adding extra regions into your model.

You could take this one step further and place a Kerb on your island. For this I can show you a handy use of the new Feature Line as a Corridor Baseline.

For this we just need a 3D Feature line to describe either the front edge of the Kerb, or the Back of Kerb. I’m going to use the back edge, because I can now use either as an attachment with the UK Kerbs supplied. See figure 5

Once you have created your feature line, set the levels. It’s easy to drop it onto your corridor surface for front of Kerb levels, and if you are using back of Kerb levels, a stepped offset from there will give you the correct levels.

In your Corridor Properties just add a baseline and notice you can add a Baseline that is a Feature line as well as the usual Alignment option (see figure 6)

This option is also available when you create a corridor.

Add your region to select your Kerb Assembly and hey presto! An island (figure 7)

One thing to note, if you are doing a central island then it needs to be split into 2 halves, one for left and one for right (figure 7)

There are lots of uses for all these tools and they certainly save time and are easier to do than in 2016.
