How to work with Ordnance Survey data

Infrastructure How To: Taking raw Ordnance Survey Data into Civil 3D, Map 3D and Infraworks.

A lot of people have been asking me how to take raw Ordnance Survey Data with Building Heights into Infraworks to show all the buildings at the correct level. In this "How to" video I take these files:

Ordnance Survey MasterMap Topographic Layer in compressed GML format (.gz) and building heights in csv format. In addition to this I use raw ground data in ascii grid format and an ECW of MasterMap Imagery Layer.

And turn it into this:

3D ground data, draped with the MasterMap Aerial Imagery data and the Building Polygons extruded to the exact height of the survey.

In this video I take 15 minutes to take the MasterMap data into AutoCAD Civil 3D and convert it for use in Infraworks. The CSV data is linked via ODBC and joined to buildings.

Once in Infraworks I also use the expression editor to randomise the building styles with a bias for Brick coloured facades and then take it one step further and create a subset of the buildings, using formatting conversion options within the expression editor to select just the small buildings and put on a pitched roof.

I hope you find this useful and watch out for the next video where I will take the model further utilising MasterMap ITN data. If you have any questions, please send us an enquiry now:
